The Day of Pentecost

We Gather in God's Name

Call to worship (based on Acts 2:1-4)

All together in one place; they heard the rush of a violent wind; it filled the entire house. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared and rested on each of them; they were filled with the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Opening Prayer

Spirit of God, we build walls and barriers. We assume and stereotype. We devalue difference and stick with what is known and familiar. Forgive our lack of courage. Embolden us to cross boundaries of difference. Fill us with your Holy Spirit that gathers us together and calls us to community. Amen.

We Hear God's Word

"Acts 2:1-21"

Second Scripture Reflection

Third Scripture Reflection

Fourth Scripture Reflection

"John 14:8-17 (25-27)"

We Respond in Prayer

Prayers of Thanksgiving and Intercession

Please stand when offering a prayer, so others will know you have the floor.

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Closing Prayer

God who gathers us, on this Pentecost Sunday, in this season of the Spirit and summer, as the days grow humid and the sun blazes hot, grant us a cool breeze of relief and the patience of a planted seed. May we grow in faithfulness in the dark, rich soil of Word and worship. May the timing of our growth coincide with your created order. May we bloom in righteousness as the sun rises high and the crops grow tall.

Peaceful Spirit, in this season of war and violence, as bombs fall on the innocent, grocery shoppers are gunned down, children run for their lives, and refugees flee their homes in search of safe haven, save us from evil and free us from our addiction to violence and weapons of destruction. Bend the arc of the universe towards justice. Inspire us with courage to resist the evil of racism, to proclaim your inclusive love, to root out the enemies of righteousness, to persist for peace.

Open our hearts and minds by the power of your Spirit, Holy God, that we might hear and receive the message you intend for us today. Amen.
